Coach Erica & Coach Eric after their 2nd & 3rd placements 2011-2012
Head Coach: Erica L. Schulman
Coach Erica started her cheerleading career at the age of 7 on her recreational town league called WPTP. She was a member of that league for the next several years as member of the Micro Redskin Squad, the Junior Clipper Squad, the Senior Clipper Squad, as well as the WPTP Competition All-Star Cheer Squad & Prop Squad. She then cheered for her middle school squad for 3 years.
From 1999-2003 she attended Putnam High School in Putnam, CT where she cheered for both football and basketball teams all four years. She was captain her senior year in 2003. Also during high school she was awarded the NECA All-American in 2001, a UCA All-Star in 2001 & 2002, the ECC Sportsmanship Award in 2002 & 2003.
After graduating high school Coach Erica attended Saint Leo University in Saint Leo, FL - a NCAA Division II University. When she began school the cheerleading program was almost non-existant. With hard work and dedication, she and another teammate of hers helped to develop the SLU Cheer Squad over the next 4 years. She also received a Leadership Scholarship in 2005 from the squad. In February of 2007, the Saint Leo University Cheer Squad competed for the first time in school history and placed 1st at the Florida State Fair Cheerleading Championships. She was captain of the squad from 2003 until graduation in 2007. The success of the 2007 squad, has not yet been matched at the University, however the program is still up and running. She graduated with her B.A. in Psychology in May 2007.
Following graduation Coach Erica moved back home to Putnam and landed an interview with former CHS Athletic Director Nancy Levinson. She was hired and began work right away for the upcoming season. Having an extreme love of competition, she made learning the fundamentals of cheerleading her main goal for the football season and competing her main goal for basketball season. Both of which were accomplished and the squad competed in 2008 and has seen growth and further successes each year since.
She is both First Aid/CPR/AED Certifield through the American Red Cross as well as certified through the State of Connecticut for coaching. She currently works during the day as a Corporate Recruiter for Spectrum Health Systems, in Worcester MA. Assistant Coach Eric N. Schulman
Coach Eric started his cheerleading career his junior year of college at Saint Leo University, and fell in love with the sport. His dedication was clear as he enrolled in tumbling classes the Summer prior and learned a round-off back handspring in just 8 weeks! Prior to cheerleading, Coach Eric was an avid golfer, baseball, and soccer player. He attended Lyman Memorial High School in Lebanon, CT where he was a member of the Golf Team & was captain his Sr. Year. He also joined the Dance Team his senior year before graduating in 2003!! Coach Eric also graduated in May 2007 from SLU with a B.A. in Hospitality & Tourism Management.
At practices, Coach Eric handles the conditioning portion of practice, and always participates alongside the cheerleader-athletes. He loves coming up with new and creative ways to help the squad reach their goals of physical fitness and strength required to complete their routines and often serves as commical relief which is sometimes very much needed during a tough practice.
He is First Aid/CPR/AED Certified through the American Red Cross as well as certified through the State of Connecticut for coaching. He currently spends his days as a Licensed Insurance Agent for Hanover Insurance Group, in Worcester MA.
Assistant Coach Keri M. French!
Keri joined our staff in the Fall of 2012, but was not new to Coventry High School or to the sport of Cheerleading. Keri began cheerleading at a young age for the Coventry Youth Football & Cheerleading Team. She cheered for the Panthers throughout middle school and cheered at CHS from 2003 - 2007. She then went on to cheer at the University of Connecticut (UCONN) (NCAA Division I) until her nursing studies demanded much more of here time. Keri graduated in the Spring of 2012 and joined our staff as a volunteer coach, specializing in tumbling. A gymnast herself, Keri has brought a much-needed energy and expertise to the squad! Keri is First Aid/CPR/AED Certified, and works as an RN at UCONN Health Center!
Team Mascot: Shaniqua Schulman
Shaniqua was a gift from the Fall 2009 squad to Coach Erica and Coach Eric. She's a teddy bear who, unlike most bears, hibernates in the Summer/Fall, because she would rather spend her winters with the cheerleading squad at practices and competitions, marking the center of the performing area for them and bringing good luck. Atop her head, she wears a white ribbon signed by each member of the current squad as a reminder that that are all one team.
