Bingo night was a success! We had a pretty good turnout (about 25-30 people) and made about $400! A HUGE thank you to everyone who either donated, or came out to support us. We had a great time, and people got to take home some really great prizes, including $80 to the winner of our 50/50 game! We hope to do it again next year and have an even bigger turnout!
After a heartbreaking loss 2 weeks ago, the CWB Patriots racked up 49 points against Stafford last Friday, making the girls do a total of 196 pushups! That brings them to a total of over 500 on the season! We have a BYE this week and will start the second half of our season next Saturday when the team travels to the Hyde Leadership Academy for a 2:00pm game.
Tonight, I will attend the Annual CT Cheerleading Coaches Meeting in Cheshire. Every year we all get together and go over the rule changes for this year, get clarification on stunt legality, and discuss the State Competition. I love this meeting because not only is it a great opportunity to get clarification on the rule changes (which are always very confusing), but it usually means there’s about 1 month left until Winter season begins!!
It’s no secret Winter Cheer is my favorite. While I LOVE the sport of football, the glow of Friday night lights, the sound of the loud speaker & pep band playing in the background… I LIVE for Winter Cheerleading. I think it might have something to do with my own cheerleading background and how exciting it was for me in high school and also in college, but it’s more than that. You get to be right in on the action, only a couple of feet away, games get so intense and the score can change so quickly. The echo of the bench cheers in the gym – Ah, it’s all so exciting.
And of course the REAL reason – COMPETITION. Without a doubt the number one reason I fell in love with the sport 21 years ago, and the reason I continue to be in love with it. There’s nothing better than competing…even when you suffer a completely heartbreaking loss like we did last year (twice on the same day), to be that emotionally and physically invested in something is an incredible feeling. It’s the one time that cheerleaders get to BE the event, instead of the sideline entertainment. It’s where all of the blood (literally), sweat (lots), tears (again, quite a few), and bruises (too many to count) become worth it. 2 minutes and 30 seconds of pure adrenalin. You push your body to its limits and you hope everyone else on your team is doing the same and you all hope that in the end, that on that day, it was better than anyone else.
I’m getting so excited just thinking about it. How am I supposed to focus for the next 35 days???? (eeek 35 days!!!!!)

The title says it all!
There is so much going on in the world of CHS Cheerleading! Very exciting things. Tonight the girls will get to wear their uniforms for the first time this season (we had been waiting for an additional uniform we ordered to come in). Tomorrow night is our much anticipated Bingo Night fundraiser! I can't believe how many cool prizes we have for the winners. I hope to see a strong turnout!
The girls have been busy working on improving stunting. We have shaken things up a bit due to an injury with one of our flyers and the team is responding well. Every practice we're seeing improvements which hopefully is the groundworks for a great winter season!
Being that we're already half way through Fall sports season, it's time to start thinking about and organizing for the Winter season!! We're all getting excited and antsy for it to get here. Competition dates began pouring in about 2 weeks ago, and basketball schedules were released today. So I spent some time this week working on the first draft of our calendar, scheduled the Informational Meeting (Nov 25th), Tryouts (Dec 3,4,5), a Lock-In (Dec. 6th) and our annual 3.5 hour competition practice (Dec. 14th).
See? SO MUCH going on!
So far the girls have done over 300 pushups this season and looking to add to that tonight! The CWB Patriots sit at a 2-2 record going into tonight's game.

This past Saturday the CWB Patriots had their first game of the 2013 season. They took on the Raiders from Windsor Locks, and it was a very exciting and entertaining game. Though in the end, the boys came up just short, in a one point loss, we had a great time.
The cheerleaders looked great, stunts hit during our 1st Quarter & 3rd Quarter performances. Our new t-shirt jerseys came in JUST IN TIME for the game and the girls looked like a million bucks. we got a lot of compliments on them too!
This week in practice we'll be working on continued stunting... we have 2 groups working on libs and they will begin working on basket tosses this week. One stunt group will be progessing on to full extensions.. they have been working on perfecting their halves, cradles, and half-reloads. And our fourth stunt group will be working on progressing to half extensions after really getting some solid thigh stands and teddy sits last week. We have been working on getting our 4th flyer some time to work with our more experienced groups so that she can build her confidence and now go back to the fourth group and do some good work. \
We will also be putting together our first half time routine for the very first HOME game and the very first football game under the NEW LIGHTS at CHS!! Very exciting.
Jumps are looking pretty good -- we have a lot of work to do with motions, but that will come with practice. As we get into the season a bit and the girls really get to know the material we will be able to work on really improving our motions.
After this week's game we have a couple of away games so we'll be re-learning the tryout dance so that we have a different dance to perform the next home game.
Good things are continuing to go on here for CHS Cheerleading...I can't wait to see where we go from here!

Last night we kicked off our Fall 2013 season with a GREAT practice! The girls were looking sharp in their cheers, and overall...jumps are looking pretty sharp as well! Timing is pretty on point, which is half the battle. We have work on some flying arms here and there, but overall, I was really pleased.
We also did some stunting. Our veteran sunt groups were looking pretty solid. Flew through halves, fulls, reloads and show n go;s. Tonight we'll push them a little more. The girls are looking strong though, which is a great sign of things to come.
We have a third stunt group that should be pretty solid. They worked together for the first time yesterday and did really well. They improved each time and went from not stunting at all together to nailing some really nice looking halves and cradles. Kudos! Tonight we'll try another first-time flyer in that group and see how she does as well. We also made a FOURTH(!) stunt group this year! That's fantastic! I haven't been able to form 4 stunt groups....ever. All of them were basically first-timers and I saw some really good work. They were busting their butts to get it to work. Very beginner level at this point, but if they keep up the hard work, we'll see some improvement quickly I'm sure.
Likely we'll be going with 3 stunt groups for the more intermediate-advanced level stunting so that we can have Front Spots on those stunts, but for basic stunts & pyramids it's going to be awesome having 4 groups!
Tonight Coach Eric is joining us for the first time since Tryouts, so he'll be conditioning the squad at the end of practice. Time to get down to business! Our first game is just over 2 weeks away!

School starts in just 2 days! Which means officially our season does too! We've already been so busy this summer getting prepared for the season, with our items all ordered, it's obvious that practices and games are right around the corner! The countdown is on to our first game and everyone's getting very excited!
This season we have 5 incoming freshman, and 1 new sophomore. This brings a refreshing dynamic to the Fall squad. We're looking at 2 veteran stunt groups and forming an additional one. This season we are lacking in experienced flyers. Our 2 veteran flyers are just sophomores but worked very hard last year. I am excited to see the growth that they experience this season in preparation for the Winter.
Cheers to the new school year! I will be updating on at least a weekly basis throughout the season!

We had our final car wash of the summer this past Saturday and I wanted to say a quick thank you to everyone who came out to support the girls, whether you had your car washed or just came over to donate -- it's much appreciated!
A HUGE "THANK YOU!!" To Reid's Grill & Creamery for allowing us to use their facility AND for posting this awesome sign out front to advertise for us!
How sweet is that?! We hope they will allow us to do more car washes there in the future!
So thanks again everyone! Our car wash total brought us to $535 so far this summer! That pays for the girls to attend the banquet at the end of the season and also covers about half of our competition music!
We have a ways to go still, but we're getting there with your help! We hope to see lots of your little ones at our Youth Clinic in a few weeks, and hope to see all of you at our BINGO NIGHT in September!!!

Well well, Summer is in full swing, the cheerleaders are busy fundraising and practicing...preparing for this upcoming school year.
Our first fundraiser was a Car Wash on July 21st which was held at the high school. We had a decent turnout and made $253! The storms held off until the minute we were cleaned up.
This coming Saturday (August 3rd) we will be hosting another car wash -- this time at Reid's Grill & Creamery! We will be there from 10:00am - 2:00pm. Come on by and get your car washed and enjoy a yummy treat while you wait!
Our next 2 fundraisers are very exciting and very fun! First up, on August 24 & 25, we will be hosting our Annual Youth Cheer Clinic. A bunch of great information can be found on our "Events/Fundraising" page, We look forward to what we hope will be a great turnout. We love hosting the clinic, several of our very own cheerleaders have attended the clinic in the past!
The final big fundraiser is new this year, and we're hoping it will be a HUGE success! We will be hosting a Bingo Night at the high school tentatively scheduled for Spetember 27th at 6:00pm. We are currently asking local businesses for donations of gift cards, merchandise, etc. to be the prizes for the Bingo games! If you are a business who would like to participate, please email us at [email protected] or call me at 860-377-5325!
On top of fundraising, the Fall squad has been attending once a week practices where we work on jumps, motions, tumbling, and learn the sideline chants we need to know to keep everyone entertained during the season. So far they know 11 chants and they learn more each week.
If you, or someone you know, missed tryouts and would like to join the Fall squad, please contact me as soon as possible! Final call is the week school begins.
Hope everyone is having a very fun and safe Summer! Cheers

Tonight we have our very first practice!! Summer practice begins. We hold once a week practices over the Summer (non-mandatory) so that we can form strong bonds before the season officially begins and so we can begin to learn the basics. It's a great time for brand new cheerleaders to have a head start in learning new material and also is a great way for the incoming Freshmen to make friends before starting school in August. We also focus a lot on conditioning our bodies to stay in shape over the summer months and prepare them for the upcoming Fall season....we do A LOT of pushups!
We have an exciting Summer planned, especially once we get into August. Between car washes/bake sales, an overnight camp, our Youth Clinic fundraiser and back to school Bingo! all before our first game in September....we have a lot of fun things to look forward to!
Hope everyone's ready for tonight and shows ready to woorrrrrk!

Well well... it's been just over a month since our year came to an end and I have been very busy with family life and work things, but cheer is always in the back of my mind.. even during the "off season" (is there really such thing for cheer coaches?)
Anyway, Fall tryouts are just under 2 months away and so the brainstorming and preparation have begun. This season we will be having a big emphasis on fund raising and have some exciting things planned in that regard. I am excited about our plans and will explain and expand on those as it gets a little closer to tryouts.
In the mean time, I hope my returning girls are getting their workouts in and at least STRETCHING EVERY DAY...and anyone interested in trying out should be doing the same. One of the most important things that also needs to be focused on this year is that the work done now, will make itself known at the end of the season when we are competing at NCCCs again.
I love the phrase put out by NCA this year "The Work is Worth it"... the work work we put in this year WILL be worth it.. when we begin our "Road to Redemption" in June.
Cheers! Coach Erica

Whelp...that's it. After practice last night and evaluating some lingering injuries we've decided with the blessing of our athletic director to not attend this year's State Tournament tomorrow night. I was pretty bummed that our season is being cut short, but it's for the right reasons and the girls are OK with it. They gave the performances of their lives on Saturday and I think that's how they want to end the season.
It's been a fun one... dare I say my favorite of the 6 years I have been coaching at Coventry. With such a small group we were able to really bond together and form some strong relationships and great memories. I REALLY liked having a small group for winter. I'll probably stay with around 12 for at least the next year -- i have at least 8 from this year's squad returning. It would be beneficial to have some alternates just in case of injuries or anything else that might come up though... I suppose time will tell.
So, instead of attending the State Tournament tomorrow night, we'll still be spending time together -- we're taking the squad out to a nice hibachi dinner at Asian Bistro in Willimantic. Should be lots of fun!
til next time!
Cheers - Coach Erica
